The Interior Signs Homeowners Should Associate With Potential Roof Damage

2 Minutes Posted on:

Since you can't always see problems with your roof without climbing up on top of your home and seriously risking your health, it's important you keep a vigilant watch inside of your house for the tell-tale signs of water leaks. While you may see water stains on a ceiling below a damaged area of a roof, there are also many other signs that you might see but not immediately associate with residential roof problems, including each of the following:

Ceiling or Wall Paint Cracking

While the paint on your home's ceilings and walls will cover up some minor water damage for a short period of time, soon after a roofing leak develops, the moisture present will cause the paint to crack from underneath. Typically, cracks caused by water leaks will look like spider webs and will consist of many smaller cracks all clustered together rather than one large crack. Large singular cracks are generally caused by a home's foundation settling rather than moisture problems, but they should still be investigated.

Wallpaper Peeling or Bubbling

If your home has walls covered by wallpaper, then it's important to watch it for any signs of peeling or bubbling. If moisture from a roof leak gets under the wallpaper by soaking into the sheetrock it's adhered to, then the water will damage the glue holding the wallpaper in place. This glue damage will cause the wallpaper to bubble or peel away from the wall. Typically, where you see wallpaper damage, you will find an underlying moisture problem in need of repair.

Musty or Moldy Smells Inside of Your House With No Known Cause

Mold, mildew, and fungus will grow on the backside of drywall or on the wood structures in your home's walls if they get wet from a roof leak. For this reason, if you smell a musty or moldy smell in your home but haven't been able to locate its root source, then there's a good chance it is caused by a roofing leak that's draining water into the attic or a wall inside of your home.

Since mold growth inside of your home is a serious health threat to its inhabitants, it's vital you track down the cause of any musty smells and remedy their cause immediately.

What to Do If You See Any of the Above

If you happen to see any of the above signs of water damage in your home, then you should contact a roofing contractor from a company like Troyer  Roofing & Construction as soon as possible for an inspection.
